Background

The Sports Club for Health ( SCforH) –process started as the initiative of the TAFISA-ESFAN by the first SCforH workshop, which took place in Helsinki February 2008. The outcome of the workshop was the “Guidelines for Sport Club for Health programmes. Next phase in this process was the symposium “Sport for Health; it is time for the sport community to became a real player for HEPA” held in the connection with 1st HEPA Europe’s conference 8th – 10th of September 2008 in Glasgow.

In this meeting the HEPA Europe established the “Sports Clubs for Health project” as one of its official programmes. The next event of this project was the 2nd SCforH workshop in Helsinki August 2009.

The purpose of the project

Sports clubs are the backbone of the European sport movement. Traditionally sports clubs have had their focus in the elite and youth sports. However, as the result of growing importance of health-enhancing physical activities, the sports clubs have to face this challenge as well.

The purpose of this project is to develop the theory based SCforH guideline system, which serves as the basic development instrument for European sports clubs. This way, it can be assumed that sports clubs have the proper know-how for planning and implementing health related physical activites.
